Chapter 4 of the NCCIH’s Indigenous cultural safety: An environmental scan of cultural safety initiatives in Canada presents cultural safety initiatives and resources developed and implemented in Alberta by the provincial government and its various departments and agencies, alone or in partnership with other governments and organizations, as well as by Alberta Health Services, professional organizations, Indigenous organizations, and other organizations with a health mandate operating in the province.

Alberta has taken numerous actions to demonstrate its commitment to advancing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. These actions include: establishing organizational structures dedicated to assisting the provincial government in carrying out is responsibilities and priorities to support improved health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples; implementing high-level initiatives and strategies to address reconciliation, health equity, cultural safety, and racism; embedding these principles in action plans to address specific health issues and Indigenous health generally; and taking a “whole-of-government” approach to working in partnership with First Nations people, Inuit, and Métis people. Further health system transformation is needed to overcome barriers that Indigenous people face in accessing health care, particularly the need to address power imbalances between health professionals and Indigenous people across diverse health professions.
